Director: Anurag Kashyap
Producer: Vikas Bahl, Vikramadithya Motwane.
Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma & Karan Johar.
Duration: 213 Minutes

An outcast of partition Balraj (Ranbir) enters Bombay, who wants to become big after seeing Priscilla Lane calling, the dying James Cagney a “big shot” from the 1939 classic The Roaring Twenties.

Balraj raises from dust, doing everything possible Street Fights, Robbery, Smuggling, Kidnapping until he lands up with Kaizad Khambatta (Karan Johar), the real estate kingpin of growing Bombay. Parallely, runs the story of Rosie Noronha (Anushka Sharma) the victim of child abuse, escapes from Goa and lands in Bombay trying to make it big with her singing.

Balraj under Khambatta transforms into the stylish Jhonny Balraj, and also the care taker for his illegal businesses. On the other hand Khambatta’s arch rival and media tycoon Jimmy Mistry (Manish Chaudhary) hires Rosie to spy on this entire cartel and reveal information by closing in with Jhonny Balraj.

Story takes a turn when the two sub plots, Khambatta’s insecurity over Balraj’s growing ambitions and Rosie’s love for Balraj intervene.  What happens next is something to watch out for.

Anurag Kashyap has done a stupendous job with the taking of movie be it showing of Bombay or his characters in quintessential style. His eye for even the small detailing is something commendable.

The drawback of Bombay Velvet lies in too many subplots and seamless parallel characters cropping up hindering the main plot and seriousness of the movie. Ranbir Kapoor has again showed with his acting that why he is considered the best in business. Karan Johar has done a fair job with his first major role as bad guy and so does Anushka.

Another important aspect of the movie that needs to be mentioned is the sound tracks of Amit Trivedi which bring in the Jazz flavor of 1960s which Anurag has cleverly used in fight sequences as well.

Bombay Velvet is cliché periodic drama that might interest you provided, only you have an eye for it.
