Coolie - Its Rajnis show all the way !
Cast: Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Sathyaraj, Aamir Khan
Director: Lokesh Kanagaraj
The union of superstar Rajinikanth and hitmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj raised massive expectations. Coolie sadly doesn't live up to the hype. The film feels muddled and inconsistent, occasionally lifted by Rajinikanth's towering presence, Anirudh Ravichander's pulsating score, and slick action choreography.
The plot strongly resembles Lokesh’s earlier film Vikram. An older protagonist with a hidden past, a crime syndicate, a mysterious villain — it’s all been done before. The problem is, unlike Vikram, Coolie lacks tight execution. The film drifts aimlessly at times, missing the coherence and focus.
Still, Rajinikanth is magnetic. At 74, his charisma remains unmatched, commanding attention with minimal effort. Whether it’s his iconic cigarette flick or a knowing smirk, he carries the film on his shoulders. The flashback sequences — featuring a convincingly de-aged Rajini — add a nice nostalgic touch..
As for the supporting cast, Nagarjuna is solid but underwhelming as the primary antagonist. His character lacks the depth and menace of recent mass movie villains. Surprisingly, it’s Soubin Shahir who steals the show. As the volatile Dayal, he gets a meatier role and makes a lasting impression — especially with scenes that are likely to trend online post-release.
The film features two high-profile cameos: Upendra and Aamir Khan. Upendra’s appearance is packed with fan service and choreographed fights that should satisfy action lovers. On the other hand, Aamir’s role as Dahaa feels tacked on — a chaotic gangster who adds very little to the story.
Coolie is not a disaster — it's visually impressive and has moments of flair. But considering the talent involved, it's ultimately a missed opportunity. The Rajinikanth-Lokesh combo deserved a more focused, impactful story. Instead, we get a film that flickers with brilliance but never fully catches fire.
