Uttama Villain is about Manoranjan
(Kamal Hassan) a movie super star who is on the verge of death due to his brain
tumor. The story is all about the actor Manoranjan trying to pull up all his
strings together be it personal or professional for his last act.
Professionally the actor wants to
put his last act with his Guru Marghadarsi (K.Balachander) whom he has deserted
after he attained the stardom. Personally its about making his relations right
with all the three women in his life who are part of his journey.
The greatness of the movie is, it travels
between two phases the actors real & reel screen which makes it complex to
understand. How Manoranjan pulls his last act is something to watch out for.
Coming to the other aspects of the
movie the screenplay, dialogues and choosing “Theeyam” an ancient art form for
the reel life aspect are class apart. Especially
the scenes between Manoranjan & his secretary, Manoranjan & his guru Marghadarsi,
Manoranjan & his doctor and Manoranjan & his son have been shot fabulously.
The directors genius can be seen in small
inferences in the shots like, the actor staring at a dying fish or the actor’s
secretary reading out letter in light have been shot so meaningfully.
Nothing much to comment on
performances, when you have pillars of acting like Kamal
Haasan, K.Viswanath, K.Balachander who have been there and done that over
years.
Overall Uttama Villain is a complex movie, more of a
substance and meaning, which most of the average masala audience may not relate
to.
